A joint initiative between the Festival Fringe Society, the Federation of Scottish Theatre and Creative Scotland, it is supported by the Scottish Government’s Edinburgh Festivals Expo Fund to raise the international profile of dance and theatre from Scotland.

The Made in Scotland 2011 programme was launched by Cabinet Secretary for Culture and External Affairs, Fiona Hyslop and includes 17 Scottish-based theatre and dance companies at Fringe 2011 selected by a panel of programmers, cultural managers and commentators from the international performing arts community. The programme represents a mix of established companies and vibrant emerging artists producing theatre, dance and children’s shows in Scotland today.

The panel who selected the Made in Scotland 2011 programme was chaired by Kath M Mainland (Chief Executive of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe) and included:

  • Mark Fisher - Freelance Theatre Critic, Writer & Guardian Contributor

Behind the scenes, the Made in Scotland project partners work with the performers to raise their profile both at the Fringe and outside Scotland. A programme of training, support and advice enables the companies to prepare for being part of Made in Scotland, supporting them to achieve their goals for participation, including profile and touring opportunities. The project also works with international promoters introducing them to the work of the showcased artists and companies to encourage international exchange.

Details of applying to be part of the Made in Scotland 2012 programme will be available in August 2011.

International Touring

A key aim of the initiative is to maximise the benefit for Scottish artists on the international platform that is the Fringe. As part of this, funding is allocated to support Scottish dance and theatre companies to take up international touring opportunities arising from performances at the Fringe. To date, Made in Scotland has supported companies to present their work in Europe, USA, Australia and New Zealand.

Further information on applying for international touring support through Made in Scotland is available here.

About the Scottish Government’s Edinburgh Festivals Expo Fund

The Scottish Government has a commitment to support Scottish artists by creating the Edinburgh Festival Expo Fund to promote Scottish work at the Edinburgh Festivals. The fund was established in 2008 and is managed by Creative Scotland on behalf of the Scottish Government and the programme is specifically targeted at the 12 festivals who are members of Festivals Edinburgh. However, a different approach was needed for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe as it's an un-programmed, open access festival and a major international showcase for Scottish artists within the performing arts. This led to the development of Made in Scotland.
